A Sea of Protest across Europe

“Wherever a new runway or new airport is planned it is meeting with well-organised and well-informed opposition”

Effective Protesting

Over the last few years Europe has been awash with protests against new airports and new runways.  And a new type of protester is emerging with a new style of campaigning which is stopping expansion plans.

What is happening with the Rome airports?

Here finally is an explanation that sounds likely.Rome has two airports: Fiumicino and Ciampino (low cost and charter); Viterbo is planned as third Roman airport to take the pressure off Ciampino which is operating at three times the approved traffic.  Viterbo is a handy invention to make it look as if something is going to be done about the illegal situation at Ciampino.

«A confused picture, which will not solve the extreme pollution caused by Ciampino airport, emerges from indiscretions about the  Piano Nazionale degli Aeroporti»

(Ciampino) - «We were awaiting the  Piano Nazionale degli Aeroporti of the Ministry for Transport, trusting that it would contain serious measures to solve the problem Ciampino, but indiscretions in the press indicate that Minister Passera's Plan is nothing but the disputable plan of ENAC and its consultants, which cannot solve the environmental and health emergency caused by air traffic at Ciampino» claims the  Comitato per la riduzione dell'impatto ambientale dell'aeroporto di Ciampino. «From leading newspapers we learn that the Plan considers  Ciampino a City-airport for national flights. This in itself is difficult to understand. The other disquieting question is that the Plan again/still includes the non-existent airport of Viterbo, which among many doubts, "one day" is meant to take the low-cost flights from Ciampino.  This is contrary to all evidence as well as the sentence of the Court of Accounts, because as everyone knows, there is no money for a new airport and for upgrading road and rail connections between Viterbo and Rome.  Who do they think they are fooling?».

«For years we have sustained that the much discussed airport of Viterbo is a hoax, an alibi, a pretext to perpetuate air traffic at Ciampino» said Pierluigi Adami, spokesman for the Comitato. «While this airport, which will never be built, remains in the Plan, they will continue to hold it up as the solution.  But Viterbo airport is a pure abstraction, while the problem of Ciampino is serious, concerning thousands of people who are being poisoned, and it calls for an urgent solution, also because it continues to operate outside the limits of environmental compatibility.  The only solution, according to the Comitato, is to restore Ciampino airport to levels that can be sustained by the area.  All commercial, air company and low-cost flights must be delocalized elsewhere.  «In the meantime, as affected citizens, we are completely unsatisfied by what the press has leaked about the Plan and we hope that Minister Passera and his Ministry will make the necessary changes before presenting the Plan to the Council of Ministers, putting an end to a situation that has violated environmental and health regulations for decades».

Protests against proposed aitport outside Nantes

fly-int-nantes3

Here is the news of the dramatic protests which are taking place in both France and Germany at the moment.
The campaigners against the proposed airport outside Nantes in South West France have today occupied the centre of Nantes with a convoy of tractors and 1,000 people.  They are supporting the peasant farmers who have moved into their 4th week of a hunger strike and are making their voices heard before Sunday’s Presidential Election.  Already the campaigners have forced Hollande, who has supported Nantes Airport, to agree it will not go ahead until all the legal cases have been heard but Sarkozy, when questioned, said the area is just a wasteland without the airport!  An insult to the beautiful area and especially to the farmers on hunger strike. More (French)
